The Platform Tavern Pub Southampton

The Platform Tavern

The present owner and Landlord Stewart Cross took over The Platform Tavern in June 1997 taking it from a run-down quiet maritime themed establishment that had seen better days to a thriving and ambient Traditional English Pub it is today. The décor today has an ethnic feel with walls adorned with masks, relics & pictures many of which Stewart has acquired from his travels abroad to make this pub truly homely & unique.

Over the years The Platform has built up a good reputation for its live music bringing some of the best acts from far away lands to local hero’s playing an array of original music with the bulk being Blues & Roots acts. Always free entry & always of the highest quality.

The food produced is of restaurant standard with local produce a priority. The menu is varied from Pub classics to more exotic fare. The Platform has become renowned for its short-crust Desperate Dan style pies, Fresh fish & Sunday lunches.

History of the Pub

The story of  The Platform Tavern dates back to 1873 and is of historical interest as it is built against the old town wall built around 1350. The pub name is derived from its proximity to the Quay outside God’s House called the Platform which contained a gun battery.  As with may taverns of the time, ale was brewed onsite for the consumption of dockers and seamen that would frequent. Many of whom would lodge in the rooms upstairs. One such guest was the ill fated Mr James McGrady who was the last victim of the 1912 Titanic disaster to be pulled dead from the sea some 4 weeks after the ship went down. His last known address was Platform Tavern. The pub had a direct view at Titanic, moored up in Dock Berth 44 of the Ocean Dock. It was also featured in the James Cameron Hollywood movie ‘Titanic’
